Professor Beach Meets Anthony Bourdain

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Anthony Bourdain.   Anthony is the host of the Award Winning Travel Channel show No Reservations. Tony travels to the far reaches of the world (often to my favorite exotic beach towns) in search of odd food and drink. His show is a mix of travel log and food adventure. I’ve had my share of odd food including Peking Duck brains to seahorse on a stick in China.  Goat and who knows what in Haiti.  I had a great time meeting Anthony Bourdain and hearing his opinion on exotic travel and eating.

Anthony stated “Real cooking is not about doing simple things with the best ingredients, like filet mignon, it’s about turning the inexpensive and ugly and yucky things like organs and tongue and brains into something delicious and interesting”.

How did I happen to meet  Anthony Bourdain?    I was reading the paper yesterday and saw an article by Jack Garner. Jack was staff film critic at the Democrat and Chronicle for 30 years before he retired in June, 2007.   He continues to write for the paper as a freelancer.   This is article he wrote yesterday about the upcoming appearance. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009911200310

I read that and off to get tickets!

The President played golf again today. This time it was at Mink Meadows in Vineyard Haven. The First Golfer played 9 holes at Mink Meadows. He will be happy to know the residents who live on the course were counting his strokes.

My friend, Deon Thomas is a Chef in Oak Bluffs.  Deon has cooked for the Clintons and several other politicians and celebrities on Martha’s Vineyard.  I hope he cooks a dinner for Pres Obama and his family.

Romero Britto and Keuka Lake

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

For many years I’ve enjoyed the art work of pop star artist Romero Britto.   I started collecting his paintings about 5 years ago.   I love the artistic expression he creates with pulsating, vibrant colors using pop themes.   He has become the premier contemporary Artist of our generation.

Because of my love for his style, I have visited his gallery on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Florida many times when I worked there.   I have followed his work and his TV appearances including Donald Trumps Apprentice (working with Kendra Todd), Martha Stewart and other high profile shows.

Last night I had the honor of meeting the star pop artist Romero Britto at the Nan Miller Gallery in Rochester, NY.  I attended a “Meet the Artist” there last night.  There was a large crowd and many of his works were on display.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with Romero and have my photo taken with him.  What I didn’t know is that Romero has spent summers on Keuka Lake, near my home, for many years.  He is familiar with the Fingerlakes!

He must have painted this when he was relaxing and enjoying his stay on Keuka Lake.

Romero lived a very modest lifestyle growing up with 8 brothers and sisters in Recife Brazil.  His creativity allowed him to fill his life with images and colors of a beautiful world.  Today Romero is world wide art star.  I will continue to follow Romero and hopefully more meetings will follow.

My Palm Beach Experience with Frank & Mark

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Thanksgiving is soon upon us and I’m reflecting about where I was last year…  Almost one year ago I took part in a wonderful experience in Palm Beach.  For many months prior to the event, I helped to organize this event.  We had weekly phone meetings and made some great plans!

Do you recognize Don Shula with me?

We asked that each attendee donate a minimum of $5,000 to the Caring House Project Foundation. Why $5,000 you ask? With $5,000 you will provide shelter for one desperately homeless family. That’s right, the Caring House Project Foundation can build a 500 square foot concrete home with metal roof, kitchen, two rooms, front porch and bathroom, all for $10 a square foot!

Should you build two homes by donating $10,000 or more you will be invited to a special lunch the day the event concludes inside a $30 million home.

Should you want to stay as a guest at Frank McKinney’s personal oceanfront home for the two nights ( there was room for 5 guests), we offered this opportunity by donating to build three homes, or a minimum of $15,000.

Rich DeVos and Douglas Doebler.
Rich DeVos is the founder of Amway and a fellow Rotarian.

Many of the hosts for this event have donated significant sums of money to CHPF and have seen the silver lining as they drove through the misery of extreme poverty in Cap Haitien, Haiti to reach the self sustaining village built by the Caring House Project Foundation that was inaugurated just a few months ago. A village that has touched over 1000 homeless men, women and children.

This is the famous painter, Michael Isreal, on the left and me, Douglas Doebler on the left.  When I was on Haiti, I took a picture of this young boy.  Michael painted this portrait of him & we auctioned off the painting at the event.  Did you see the T-shirt that I designed as a birthday gift to Frank when I visited Haiti in February?

Michael Isreal does big charity auctions – paintings often sell for $50,000. Watch these videos to see some of his work… make sure to turn up the sound!  This New York City video has had almost 8 million hits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZFkZiwMLZ4

This video of his Big Brother/Big Sister painting in Tampa has had thousands of hits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1bCKtX4uEc

This is Frank McKinney with me, Douglas Doebler.  Frank was the creator of this event with the Haiti boy painting – this painting raised $45,000.

The event was a huge success and we raised close to $700,000.  Yes – almost 3/4 of a million dollars!  This money raised will help build next two villages in Haiti.

We did an interesting exercise to “leave your fears behind”…

With 300 people watching, I stepped into a coffin.  It was a little chilling & eerie at the least, but made me think about my “fears” and how to overcome them!

Here is our group touring Frank’s Spec Homes

My good friend Mark Evans also helped us organize this event.

See for yourself what Frank McKinney and I witnessed that very 1st day I spent in Cap Haitian, Haiti.

It was a true life changing experience for me!
