Professor Beach Visits Haiti

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I recently returned from Haiti. One of the cities I visited was Montrouis, a Beachtown that is near Saint Marc and two hours from the Capital of Port Au Prince. Montrouis is a coastal town in western Haiti. Montrouis is also one of the best beach towns in Haiti, with several well renowned hotels and resorts, including le Moulin-sur-Mer. The town is located on the Cotes des Arcadins, one of Haiti’s longest stretches of pure white sand beaches.   It is also an exceptional place for sailing and fishing.

Haiti is on the West side of an Island in the Caribbean.  The East side of the Island is the Dominican Republic.

My Palm Beach Experience with Frank & Mark

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Thanksgiving is soon upon us and I’m reflecting about where I was last year…  Almost one year ago I took part in a wonderful experience in Palm Beach.  For many months prior to the event, I helped to organize this event.  We had weekly phone meetings and made some great plans!

Do you recognize Don Shula with me?

We asked that each attendee donate a minimum of $5,000 to the Caring House Project Foundation. Why $5,000 you ask? With $5,000 you will provide shelter for one desperately homeless family. That’s right, the Caring House Project Foundation can build a 500 square foot concrete home with metal roof, kitchen, two rooms, front porch and bathroom, all for $10 a square foot!

Should you build two homes by donating $10,000 or more you will be invited to a special lunch the day the event concludes inside a $30 million home.

Should you want to stay as a guest at Frank McKinney’s personal oceanfront home for the two nights ( there was room for 5 guests), we offered this opportunity by donating to build three homes, or a minimum of $15,000.

Rich DeVos and Douglas Doebler.
Rich DeVos is the founder of Amway and a fellow Rotarian.

Many of the hosts for this event have donated significant sums of money to CHPF and have seen the silver lining as they drove through the misery of extreme poverty in Cap Haitien, Haiti to reach the self sustaining village built by the Caring House Project Foundation that was inaugurated just a few months ago. A village that has touched over 1000 homeless men, women and children.

This is the famous painter, Michael Isreal, on the left and me, Douglas Doebler on the left.  When I was on Haiti, I took a picture of this young boy.  Michael painted this portrait of him & we auctioned off the painting at the event.  Did you see the T-shirt that I designed as a birthday gift to Frank when I visited Haiti in February?

Michael Isreal does big charity auctions – paintings often sell for $50,000. Watch these videos to see some of his work… make sure to turn up the sound!  This New York City video has had almost 8 million hits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZFkZiwMLZ4

This video of his Big Brother/Big Sister painting in Tampa has had thousands of hits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1bCKtX4uEc

This is Frank McKinney with me, Douglas Doebler.  Frank was the creator of this event with the Haiti boy painting – this painting raised $45,000.

The event was a huge success and we raised close to $700,000.  Yes – almost 3/4 of a million dollars!  This money raised will help build next two villages in Haiti.

We did an interesting exercise to “leave your fears behind”…

With 300 people watching, I stepped into a coffin.  It was a little chilling & eerie at the least, but made me think about my “fears” and how to overcome them!

Damage in Haiti – What Can We Do?

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I just received this email from Frank McKinney.  I have been to Haiti twice.  The people there have become a passion for me.  Please take the time to read the email from Frank.

Dear Caring House Project Foundation Friends,
Self sufficiency cannot take hold when survival is all that matters, and that is what is struggling mightily given the impact of four hurricanes in the last month in Haiti. The situation is dire.

Here is what we are doing and how you can help:

We sent down 200,000 meals with a 3-to-1 starch-to-protein ratio that will clear customs tomorrow. When buying in bulk, we can secure a meal for $0.10, so this shipment cost our Caring House Project Foundation $20,000. We will ship more once we receive an assessment from our partners on Saturday. To participate in providing emergency food relief to the people of Gonaives, you can donate $250 to serve 2,500 meals http://frank-mckinney.com/donate.aspx.

We are well into the process of building a large self-sufficient village in Gonaives, an area shown on the national news and in the attached photos. Below is a summary of the village. Of the planned 35 homes, 20 are complete so far and are acting as a temporary emergency shelter. The 20 homes, each constructed out of concrete and set on higher ground, are housing 300 people who have been displaced.

Our upcoming Frank McKinney’s Ultimate Tour of Extremes – From Rich to Enriched event will benefit CHPF’s efforts in Haiti. Please take a minute to visit the link, http://www.frank-mckinney.com/FMEvents2.aspx?EventID=10. This will allow an unprecedented opportunity for you to see firsthand the impact you are having in Haiti, not to mention all of the other experiences that are a part of the event.

Frank McKinney’s Ultimate Tour of Extremes – From Rich to Enriched is the next time we will be visiting Haiti. It will be memorable. If you can’t come, we would still appreciate your support as soon as practical.

Gonaives Summary:

Gonaives is located approximately 106 miles north of Port-au-Prince on Haiti’s west-central coast, and is the country’s third largest city. It is an extremely arid, dusty city with saltpans and brackish lowlands on the east side and deforested mountains overlooking the city to the west. The majority of its estimated 70,000 inhabitants live below the poverty level. The majority of the adults are subsistence farmers who provide for their families by means of small crops.

Many residents of Gonaives still remain homeless due to the devastating hurricane in 2003, now compounded by the four hurricanes of 2008. The city’s water system is still in ruin, due to damaged/missing water well pumps, mud-clogged drains, and contaminated water.

The Caring House Project in Gonaives will promote community development by providing safe housing, nutritious food resources, education facilities, potable and accessible water, and a multi-purpose facility for community engagement for the residents of Ponte Quenepe in Gonaives:

1) Construction of 35 concrete double-unit homes. Each home will also include an individual sanitation unit, inclusive of pit latrine and shower stall.

2) Distribution of 35 sets (3 each) of fruit trees for every home built.

3) Construction of a 9-classroom schoolhouse, which also includes an office for school administration and a separate office for teachers. The campus will also feature a playground area for outdoor activities. Sanitation facilities will consists of 2-indoor units, and one-sanitation block housing 8 pit latrines.

4) Construction of a multi-purpose community center building for skills and vocational training.

5) Implementation of an animal husbandry initiative, which will provide a goat to each housing recipient. Also 24 milking cows will be purchased and deposited on a 300-acre farm where they will be raised for the production of dairy products. Food products from the farm will be donated to the school, and made available to the community.

6) Establishment of a vegetable and fruit tree farm, complete with irrigation system, which will be situated on the aforementioned 300-acre farm. The horticulture project will provide for the cultivation of mango trees, avocados, breadfruits, and cassava sticks, and assorted vegetables and fruits. All produce will be accessible to villagers, distributed to local feeding programs, and sold at market. Revenue from sales will be reinvested back into the farm. Local residents will maintain the farm.

7) The construction of a concrete cistern, installation of a submersible pump, and plumbing connections and pipe fixtures.

The Caring House Project in Gonaives will improve the lives of 20,000 people living in the impoverished community of Ponte Quenepe and provide needy families with basic resources that will radically change their lives, resulting in a healthier and promising future.

Please join us in helping these people that have just experienced such loss, whether it is helping to build the sustainable village with safe housing http://www.frank-mckinney.com/FMEvents2.aspx?EventID=10 or to send emergency food relief http://frank-mckinney.com/donate.aspx to Gonaives.

Thank you for all your support and interest in helping those in greatest need!

Cap Haitian, Haiti

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Would you believe one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere is only 3 hours by plane from Fort Lauderdale, Florida?

I couldn’t believe it either until I saw it on February 22, 2007. We hadn’t flown to Africa or India or Pakistan. We were in the Caribbean. You know – lifestyles of the Rich and Famous playground.

I spent the day with my good friends Frank McKinney and Mark Evans in Cap Haitian, Haiti. Frank and Mark are both best selling authors in the Real Estate Field. Frank builds some of the worlds most expensive spec homes (mansions) in Palm Beach Florida. Frank chartered a plane and flew a delegation of his charity donors to Cap Haitian, Haiti. We witnessed the contrast between despair and great hope that this poor country holds. We took part in the dedication of the second village that Franks Caring House Project Foundation has built in Haiti.

Words cannot describe what we saw, smelled and experienced that day!

I have been involved in the construction of these self sustaining villages that take orphaned children and families out of the dumps (a real garbage dump in a big swamp) and move them into safe and sanitary housing where they are educated, are fed while watching over them in regards to  their health and welfare. Additional information on Frank McKinney’s website  www.frank-mckinney.com with a recorded message from him (turn up your sound). Also check out his Multi-Million $$ homes that he builds. Frank often considers himself a modern day Robin Hood. Selling these incredible Mansions to the Rich so that he can build homes for the homeless in the poorest locations in the world. His current project is a $135 Million Dollar Spec Home on the beach just south of Palm Beach.
